چکیده

Recent advances on programmable friction technologies make it possible to change the friction perception of an interactive surface such as a touchpad or a touchscreen. However, regardless of the technology used, these effects cannot reproduce the fine grain sensation of physical surfaces. Moreover the effect is applied to the whole surface, so each finger exploring the surface feels the same sensation. Little is known about the impact of these limitations on the perception of patterns rendered on these devices. We present a study which compares the perception of tactile textures with a programmable friction device (squeeze film effect) and with a physical support (printed coated paper cards). We show that despite the limitations of programmable friction, participants interpret textures in a similar way. Differences occur at the limit of the input resolution. Author

Kinetic Surface Friction Rendering for Interactive Sonification: an Initial Exploration

Inspired by the role sound and friction play in interactions with everyday objects, this work aims to identify some of the ways in which kinetic surface friction rendering can complement interactive sonification controlled by movable objects. In order to do this, a tactile system is presented which implements a movable physical object with programmable friction. Important aspects of this system...

Exploring Tactile Perceptual Dimensions Using Materials Associated with Sensory Vocabulary

Considering tactile sensation when designing products is important because the decision to purchase often depends on how products feel. Numerous psychophysical studies have attempted to identify important factors that describe tactile perceptions. However, the numbers and types of major tactile dimensions reported in previous studies have varied because of differences in materials used across e...

Visuo-Tactile Servoing for Exploration and Manipulation

We present a hierarchical control framework to allow for robust manipulation and exploration of objects with unknown shape, mass, and friction. The framework is divided into 3 layers: joint-level, tactile servoing, and visual servoing. While the middle layer provides “blind” surface exploration skills, maintaining desired contact patterns, the visual layer monitors and controls the actual objec...

STReSS: A Practical Tactile Display System with One Millimeter Spatial Resolution and 700 Hz Refresh Rate

A tactile display system is described which can produce ‘tactile movies’, that is, rapid sequences of tactile images refreshed at a rate of 700 Hz. The display uses an array of one hundred laterally moving skin contactors designed to create a time-varying programmable strain field at the skin surface. The density of the array is of one contactor per millimeter square, resulting in a device with...

Vibration Signal Synthesis for Representing Cutaneous Tactile

A surface meso-structure measurement and tactile device input vibration signal synthesis techniques are proposed. To measure the surface meso-structure, some photos are taken using a fixed camera with changing lighting incidence direction. A surface normal image is obtained from these photos. Then vibration signal as tactile device input signal is synthesized. Adding friction sound, the tactile...
